May 6 - 12 History marked with events
Admire antique cars, take walking tours and clap your hands for ethnic dancers. More than 40 events are planned for Historic Red Deer Week/Doors Open 2006.
Organizer Sheryl Krill said the fourth annual event from May 6 - 13 will celebrate Red Deer's history and heritage. Forty-four organizations, businesses and individuals plan to host more than 40 events this year. That's 12 more than last year. There is still time to include your event, said Krill. Anyone interested can contact Krill at 347-1662 and register by the end of the month.
"If people have an event with an historical theme, they can do it. For instance, the week includes cemetery and downtown tours". On May 5 and 6, the Central Alberta Vintage Auto Club will sell antique cars, trucks and parts at Westerner Park. Students will share their Canadian history projects during the Historica Schools Fair on May 6 at Parkland Mall. Red Deer College will display memorabilia, old yearbooks and calendars through the week.
There will be tours of St. Mary's Church, historical homes on 54th Street, Red Deer Cemetery and Sunnybrook Farm. Walking tours will also visit downtown Ghosts statues and murals and historic downtown sites.
Four groups of ethnic dancers will stut their stuff on May 12 at the Red Deer Museum.
The event will also promte the coming Alberta Summer Games. Information can be found at www.historicreddeerweek.com and www.doorsopenalberta.com.
